European Politicians and Leaders Must Act Now to Protect Democracy Since Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter over two years ago, the platform—now rebranded as X—has taken a troubling turn. The growing influence of its CEO in shaping political narratives and promoting specific ideologies, including altering how content is prioritized to reflect his own interests, has become increasingly apparent. As one of the world’s most visited social media platforms, with millions of active users and a signifi
Also, and that’s just my suggestion, I see this in the petition:
Afaik, they are working something up, apart from that, always good to be critical:
So tbh, I feel that the petition should be asking for more. Like a complete inquiry of this named person on his abuse of power and undemocratic tendencies. And, maybe a threat to sanctioning him and or his platform for a while.
Or go even further and demand that government fund, develop, encourage and only use open and publicly controlled social media or communications systems and move away from any and all corporate controlled private media.
I get your criticism, but the question how much Musk is using his ownership of the platform to positively discriminate his posts against other posts, is more complicated to prove and also i am not sure if there is legal standards yet, to address these issues. And frankly touting nonsense and having newspapers spread this nonsense is not something to legally challenge, unless he is violating existing laws like for hate speech or incitement. These are things for the courts, not the governments though and we see problematic crack downs on free speech and free speech related rights like freedom of assembly a lot already, mainly targeting ecological and social justice causes.
The governments not aiding twitter by using the platform is a low hanging fruit and they cannot give any reasonable arguments against it. The only technically reasonable argument i have heard so far is otherwise not reaching people who use that platform as main source of information. But there will still be people who broadcast it there and hardly anyone these days uses only one platform.
First of all thaks for your reply.
To make sure we are on the same page, I want to underscore that it wasn’t criticism. Like I said, it was a suggestion and also I applaud the initiative. I just want to give extra input to the initiative.
So getting back to your points, I fully agree that one must tread very carefully when limiting opinions and freedom in all its forms. Your concerns are valid imo.
That’s why we are talking about the acts of a certain person and why I mentioned calling for an investigation. It’s up to the democratic platforms to decide what happens. As a citizen I don’t have to come up with a legal solution, but I do feel thr need to express my preoccupation with certain actors and their abuse of power.
Also, there is already a law in place to limit “x” formerly twitter, it’s the Digital Services Act.
I believe the leaders are making steps, but yes it’s been quite slow And it’s unphantobale to me that officials still use an X account. Many are thankfully moving their accounts to mastodon and the likes, I’ve heard.
This trolling situation , if you can call it that, seems have to exploded, and has become more urgent lately. This has pushed the "x-case " higher up on the agenda, so I hope our leaders will come up fast with a good plan.
