Someone could be jailed or fined in the US for being 1/4 black, 1/8, or having “one drop” (aka some identifying physical feature - I can only imagine the inaccuracies there). The Nazis were more lenient (!!) - presumably because many of them wanted to ensure they would themselves not be subject to these laws, but they were looking for consistency in application
