Very nice! I started to rewatch it all with some friends a while ago and been slowly getting through it (I hate timezones…). We’re into season 7 (Matt Smith’s 3rd season?).

Give Tennant a bit though, he will grow on you. By the 3rd season (2nd season of Tennant) the show changes a little and moves away from the odd-ball camera angles and feels a bit more refined (from memory at least).

I think Matt Smith is peak Who for the reboot. It starts to go downhill for me from then on. Which is a shame because I was really looking forward to Capaldi and Whittaker had potential, I just think the showrunner and writers were absolute garbage. I never finished her first season, it was such a slog and it just didn’t click with me at all.

But I’ll shut up now haha. Let me know what you think of Tennant after you finish season 2 :)

I’ve heard from a friend that ask ten people and you’ll get eleven different rankings of the Doctors so we’ll see haha.

Very true. I think if you ask most of my generation-ish they will say Tennant, for new Who at least. He’s mine, but it’s so neck and neck with Smith… I struggle to split them apart they were so brilliant. The team behind them both were excellent and I think made it easy for them both to shine.

I concur, Smith is peak. Tennant is a close second for me.

It was a shame about Whittaker’s tenure, I love the actress…but for some reason I felt like she tried to convey too much of Smith’s manic energy? It also didn’t help the stories were too badly written and the companions had personalities of marmite. Except for maybe Graham.

Gatwa has potential, I enjoyed his special a lot.

I definitely think you’re right. Tennant and Smith almost set a standard that maybe she felt like she had to tap into. Tennant gave us an energetic performance that Smith took to another level, so we get this lovable quirky energetic insanity.

Each doctor has had some sort of quirk about them though, if you go back and watch some of the older stuff they were always oddballs, but I think each actor brought something else to the role that I don’t know if Whittaker tapped into.

But the whole series was largely pretty rubbish, so I almost feel like she’s a little hard done by. We’ll never know. I would have like for her to have stayed on one more series under RTD. Maybe we actually see what she can do.
