Can police even look up a legitimate passport?

I mean, it should be fine as long as there aren’t open warrants against you or someone with the same name and information on the passport. Possessing a useless document is not, itself, a crime. It would also demonstrate to them that the document means nothing at all in reality.

Right, I know. But as long as it’s not attempting to be close enough to the real thing to be a counterfeit issue, official-ish looking documents from agencies without any actual authority or association with the government are not illegal in themselves. Nor is it illegal even to present as identification so long as they contain accurate details about yourself. You should be able to present it to an officer without criminal repercussions even if it’s only as useful or authoritative as a post-it note with your name on it.

They’re not talking about a passport, they’re talking about a “passport.”
