Not sure why I couldn’t really get into the anime for this one (I ended up dropping after last episode because I just lost focus), but really looking forward to the light novel publication whenever that ends up releasing.
I haven’t gotten to watch this episode yet, but I read a good portion of the WN ages ago and really liked it. Personally, I like the WN more than the anime. I understand there are some changes from the WN to the LN, but it should be quite similar. Something to keep in mind is that this story was actually written before a lot of the things that people claim it is derivative of. Many people accuse Tsukimichi of copying Slime in particular when Tsukimichi was actually written first and helped inspire a lot of the story elements in Slime.
Leave it to Makoto to have a summer vacation that doesn’t really line up with what we would think of as a typical vacation. He spends it training and researching. One thing I am sort of sad to see get cut is the time he spends with his students in Rotsgard during this time. They are also diligently training during this period (even though the Rembrandt sisters need to go home halfway through).
It has been a while since I read the WN, but I don’t remember this mana matter stuff. I remember the book that the librarian provides had knowledge in it about the nature of magical incantations, not the physical manifestation of mana. So, this might be a part of the story that changed as it evolved from WN to LN. I am interested to see where this thread of the story goes.
I had complained in previous episodes that Aqua and Eris’s humor was not really coming through as much in the anime adaptation, but they certainly did this episode. The whole sequence around the ice barrier was great. More silly forest ogres please! Also as a side note, this sequence happened (metaphorically) off screen in the WN version, so it was nice to see it animated!
This episode actually sets up a lot of things that will be important later in the story. It was awesome to see Shiki get to flex a bit as well as Mio show off her latest toy. In the end, we didn’t get to see Tomoe do her thing, but a true samurai never flaunts their power…or something like that. She was probably more interested in eating persimmons.

Hmm, I could be misremembering but I don’t quite remember it being this early either, I thought it was first introduced in the next arc, or the one after it. Honestly not sure where they’re separated. Once they got to Rotsgard in the manga I was like “Oh my favorite arc is coming up” and that was three years ago, and it’s still probably a year or more before it even gets there.
There has been a lot of rearranging/skipping things in this series. On one hand, I get it. There are so many different characters and story lines going on that rearranging things to have an episode mostly stay in one location makes sense. However, it means that there is content that is inevitably cut (like the students in Rotsgard this episode). This season is going for 2 cours, so they still have some time to go back and make sure more of the story is told, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they just keep their foot on the gas pedal since there is a lot of story to this series. Depends on where they want to end the season I guess.
Great episode.
Tomoe, please. Everything combos well with booze if you’re a drunkard!
The very idea of concentrating mana until it becomes a liquid is… weird. And I’m almost sure that the idea of the original author of the book was that you could get a small ball of mana matter, or thing like this. But no - Makoto had to overdo it!
Aqua and Eris being derp. I love it.
With this episode I think it passed the manga as well? Crazy fast pacing, or I guess skipping a lot of stuff, which much like season one may be good or might be bad if they ever have to go back to it
Oh I forgot to mention, the Shiki stuff was pretty cool to see animated. Isolated it almost could look like he’s the main character here.
Shiki's power
I don’t think this is a spoiler since it all happened in the past but it’s cool to note the rings he used were the rings they gave him to try to make his mana barely comparable to Makoto’s, which then became part of him. I can’t quite recall but I imagine 13 steps is related to each ring, I think I vaguely recall them saying something like double up rings on his fingers because 10 wasn’t enough.
I always liked that feature of Shiki’s powers, that it relates back to the method by which they essentially created his current form. It makes sense that if the majority of the mana you have been imbued with comes from somewhere else, it might take some time for you to learn how to use it.
