In my asklemmy post (here: https://lemmy.world/post/20013379) I asked if anybody could help me because the mouse just does not glide well on my mousepad, while the 10 year old gaming mouse does glide.

The answers were pretty good and something I looked into. Then, I was just like “what if…” and put regular tape on the mouse, just to test it… and… it glides!

Yes, that replaced the low-riding, AA-powered Magic Mouse that had the delightful battery door that ripped off chunks of fingernail when attempting to open. THAT mouse replaced the stupid, short-corded, anti-ergonomic hockey puck mouse, which in turn replaced the single-buttoned Apple Bus Mouse 2, which arguably is the last best mouse Apple made.

“Hey, let’s hire Jony to do design! But don’t let him ANYWHERE near the mice department, k?” -Jobs, probably.

Akshualy, in between the magic mouse and the hockey puck was the mighty mouse. The almost ergonomic one with the 360 degree scroll ball that always failed because the white plastic around it scraped the gunk and dead skin cells off your finger and gummed up the scroll sensor.

Eta: if they made the mighty mouse touch sensitive like the magic mouse and removed the ball, they’d have room to put a charge port on the front and get those side grip buttons too. Only down side would be the height/thickness that makes it ergonomic in the first place

You’re correct, I skipped over the Mighty Mouse. Those scroll balls were the original fidget toy.

Enh, it takes like 20 minutes to charge and lasts months. Go walk for 20 every 2 months and you’re good.

I actually quite like the feel of mine for my laptop. I use a pc mouse on my iMac though.

          Weird, same.

I’ve got a Logitech mouse for my desktop but use the magic on my laptop. Ive got the old one with the swappable double AAs though.

The hate for the charge port baffles me a bit though. Charging for 10 min is enough to last me a day at work, then just plug it in when I’m done to top it up.

God I hate that mouse so much. It’s basically a testament to apple’s 2010’s design philosophy: make the worst products possible.

      But it’s innovative!

I know it’s garbage, but its sole purpose is to be used by the left hand while the right is doing numpad stuff - and I’ve tried alternatives :(

The edges of those slider bits can be pretty rough from the factory. If you want to skip the tape just slightly sand or file the corners of the mouse. Once they wear they get a bit smoother, but some gamer mice have some insane anti grip pads that have 0 traction, but the Apple ones have a bit even once worn in.

You mean you don’t need to buy a $1000 mouspad that’s compatible?

Am amazed at the immense usability flaws. From the company that puts out guidelines on How Things Should Be Done.

Fan of their hardware, but I just don’t get this one.

Ever since the puck (and needing right click for some 3D modelling software - Ray Dream Studio), I’ve been using third party mice with any Apple computer I use. I had almost forgotten they even make mice.

Totally! I got my old mouse a profile set up to navigate the UI way better than the mouse itself.

Fairly certain a two finger click is the same as a right click on the Magic Mouse.

No. You only have left click. In the settings you can make right side = right click and left side = left click. You can’t even click left + right at the same time.

            • Click = left click
            • ctrl + click = Right click
            • seperate clicks without ctrl found in settings
            • 1 finger double tap = zoom in/out
            • 1 finger swipe up/down = scrolling
            • 1 finger swipe left/right = back/forward
            • 2 Finger swipe left/right = switch between desktops
            • 2 finger double tap = mission control

            That’s about all the functions.
