It also takes a city council that is paid by car culture to ignore resident requests to build a crosswalk or path from where people live to the shops. The grocery store involved would like that path too, and probably worth it to pay for it or most of it.

That’s not too bad. Walking 800m to the supermarket is a piece of cake
Not by distance. But imagine doing it on a 0.5 meter strip of poorly maintained concrete slabs, with the occasional light post sticking up and forcing you into an even narrower space or onto the uncut grass. Now imagine that strip is surrounded by nothing interesting to look at, and just a couple meters away, there is a constant stream of large trucks going 100-120 km/h beside you. And every time you hit an intersection, you’re going to have to prepare to cross 6-8 lanes of that stream as drivers who don’t expect you to be there have their eyes glued to the green light they have as they turn into the crosswalk that the signal is telling you is safe to cross. Now you arrive at the parking lot and the last 200m don’t even have a sidewalk, you are just walking in the road through the parking lot as you pass empty spot after empty spot because an engineer in the 60s pulled the wrong number out of his ass when guessing how many spots grocery stores should be legally reguired to build. Oh, and the grocery store is structured for people who are buying in bulk, not for someone who just wants to grab a couple days of food that they can carry while they are walking. Yeah, it’s no less physically possible than the 800m stroll you were envisioning, but it becomes pretty clear pretty quick that nobody in charge wants you to do what you are doing in that environment.
It would be way better if it was only 130m though.

Yeah, but here in the US they don’t take just one piece of cake, they take the whole damn thing. Also these land whales blobbing around won’t walk that far for anything. Not even more cake and ice cream.

It’s Florida. Extremely hot and humid. The video is correct that this car-centric design is intentional. But that’s because people seriously do not want to go outside for longer than it takes to get into their car. So they definitely don’t want the city spending money to build a 400 foot walking path they’re never going to use.
It also needs to be said that Americans buy groceries differently than most other countries. They shop less often and buy much larger quantities, necessitating a car to handle all of the bags.
I’m all in favour of walkable cities but I would not choose to live in a walkable city in Florida!
This is probably partially true, but some of those apartments are closer than some of those parking spaces. 😆

It’s awful and geographically most urbanized areas in the US are built this way. Thank god for the small areas that were built before cars were invented. I live in one and while we still have huge negative impacts from car infrastructure at least walking and biking are viable alternatives here, even if the system doesn’t put them first.
The US is truly a shithole country.
On the flip side, one of the UKs major transport problems is that we were the first to industrialise. So although we have rail networks all over the place, they worm through literally thousands and thousands of small bridges and tunnels designed in the Victorian era. So not only can the speed not increase (at least not without buying the surrounding land and straightening the track, crazy expensive) adding any physical dimension to the trains would basically mean re-digging tons of tunnels and lifting bridges, which would also make the cost crazy.
Meanwhile Germany is zooming about in double decked trains like a boss…

Meanwhile, cycling in London is actually getting pleasant in some parts. And it’s seriously satisfying to zip past cars congested for miles. The tube is 24hr as is a large part of the bus network.
We had the same issues here but then made them much worse by canceling virtually all rail lines and even tearing up a lot of the track in many places. So same situation with air travel almost always being cheaper and faster and on top of that rail travel only connects major cities and can’t connect to smaller cities and towns at all.
Your rail problem could be fixed if they were willing to invest in modernizing the system.
To get nice new/modern trains would involve widening our tracks and updating the infrastructure. Where I live in the (flat) country who gives a shit - it’s all just
land bankingfarms anyway, but near towns and cities it’s going to involve a huge amount of, at best disruption and and worst the massive displacement of the population who have homes that back onto rail lines.Also we’d need all new bridges, tunnels, etc.
And we’re currently broke as fuck because all the rail operators have been siphoning profit to
foreign governmentsshareholders since we privatised the fuck out of the country.There’s not much that will kill you in the UK but there’s a lot that will make you want to die.
Smaller two wheeled cars is the answer! Maybe the wheels are really thin and connected to the bearings via some kind of hub and cables?
You can fit a shit ton of those in a small parking space.

Weird, that menu should have a share button in it. Maybe try checking that you have the latest version?

Might want to try making sure you’ve got the latest app version if you haven’t already. Beyond that, might want to try posting in [email protected]. Logging in works for me 🤷
I dont have an app, i use it through Mull. Javascript JIT is disabled
Oh, I don’t think the web version allows for browsing videos at this point. It’s still in heavy development. I can log in on the web on Firefox, but that just lets me change account settings and whatnot.

The app is huge and “Loopless” is only available if you have a google account so…
What do you mean by Loopless? I’m running GrapheneOS with sandboxed Google Play services that isn’t logged in to any account and the app works normally as far as I can tell. At any rate, might be worth posting about in [email protected], someone else might be having the same experience as you.
The app is fine but prett huge. The alternative client “Loopless” is not available like a normal software project
