“Tariffs are taxes," said Kildee [(D)]. “President-elect Trump’s proposal will drive higher prices for consumers and contribute to higher inflation.”
Wish they would have driven this message harder nationwide.
Yeah but with more than half of Americans with reading comprehension skills of a sixth grader, I don’t think Democrats way of communicating would have helped unfortunately.
Yeah, people were shouting this from the roof tops. Many people were having this conversation with any conservative leaning person. And the response was a resounding “Nuh, uh. Eggs are expensive now, things were cheaper with orange man”
I’m going to cut right to the chase in everyday conversations and call them “the trump tax”.
Not that it will do much good, but the more people that know about this, the better. Better to frame it properly and let the opposition and the low-info try to roll it back.
For the magabrained that start up with the arguments, I’ll innocently ask them if this isn’t what they voted for?
Yeah but with more than half of Americans with reading comprehension skills of a sixth grader
I admire your optimism and generosity.
For real. Kamala was arguing like she was in a courtroom. Not helpful to be honest.
Her mistake was treating people like smart adults instead of handing out tasty crayons.
Smart is a judgment.
A lot of people don’t have good access to education. Because the right-wing wants an uneducated electorate so they gut education. Because of systemic racism and oppression. Because of colonialism and genocide.
She needed to use language more skillfully. If she would have gone on Joe Rogan and talked about the steps the Biden administration had been taking towards legalizing marijuana, I bet she would have won.
It’s my judgment that they didn’t run a very smart campaign.
I think a lot of “well actually” shit would have started up from not only the extremist right wing, but the “liberal media” as well, telling everyone that tariffs are not really taxes and so on. Just enough cover for the nitwits to still vote for their racism anyway, er, I mean, because of the price of eggs, you guyz!
Shame that Michigan voted for this.
I do wonder what Michigan Republicans have to say, something I wish the crap press would actually push for instead of just quoting Democrats/progressives.
I live in MI and work for a company that imports Japanese parts for robots in manufacturing (mostly auto). My boss is a vehement Trumper who says he only cares about politics because of the economy and manufacturing. I asked him how tariffs would help a company like ours who imports products. He said that it will help because we will sell more parts, because manufacturing will increase so much.
We also sell these same parts in Mexico and Canada, so we sell them either way. I don’t get the logic, I guess.
Get your resume in order man.
I’m trying to get back into teaching. That’s probably a mistake too.
Not if you shop yourself overseas.
It’s not realistic to leave the country for me.
manufacturing will increase
That’s the idea, but it won’t actually happen.
Say you make widgets and a tariff makes domestic widget production attractive. Spin up a new factory!
But you won’t because you realize the tariffs are going to be an economic clusterfuck and you don’t want to be left holding the bag on a brand new factory when they’re repealed.
“He’s finally hurting the right people”.
The working class?
I mean that’s what the majority of them voted for right?
So cars will be significantly more expensive no matter where they’re made?
I’m getting ready for the inter-generational warfare to rev up even higher, blaming the cost of things for Gen Foo on Gen Bar (as if only one generation has to pay for things, but this is why I find it suuuuch a stupid distraction - turns out the poor among the boomers or the Greatest Generation get hurt by this stuff, too.) , when the blame should lie with Republicans and their bullshit notions about economics.
There’s a huge amount of boomer hatred out there which is very misplaced. Nearly all the people who are leading MAGA are GenX at most and a lot of millennials. All the Proud Boys and such have to be young enough to believe they can physically fight. It is 100% stupid Republican ideas that are going to screw this country up.
I could not agree more. The constant retread of “Gen Foo just doesn’t ‘get it’ like Gen Bar does” or “Gen Bar are too soft and are a bunch of layabouts and complainers” is so very tired. You could find articles written today about Gen Alpha and find similar sentiments written about the boomers, and give a few decades, they’ll probably be writing the same things about how Gen Alpha sold out Gen Delta or whatever…
It has nothing to do with the two arbitrary dates someone happened to be born between and then lumped in as a “generation”, and has everything to do with conservative policies…
Though I will say I do wonder where some of this is headed given algorithms are doing this narrowcasting at the exact same time that people seemingly have little to no instruction in critical thinking - not that I think we’ve ever really been great at instruction in critical thinking, mind you. In any case, it might be the youngest among us and those that come after may be prone to engaging in some of the most extremist right wing insanity we’ve seen on these shores in a very long time.
Pitting generations against each other is just another way to distract people while they are being robbed and enslaved by the super rich.
I totally agree with you about how critical thinking is harder to come by. I do think some of it has to do with the vast number of information sources out there. There’s so much stuff competing for attention, diametrically opposed opinions, opinions presented as facts, etc that perhaps critical thinking is harder than it was in simpler times, when getting information was pretty much limited to books, the newspapers, and TV, all of which had to pass through editors in order to be made public.
Well, the Republicans and conservatives wanted to “disrupt” the bad ol’ Big Government by voting for a complete dumbass Archie Bunker like donvict.
They confuse someone stating something over and over again and very loudly for “leadership”. Classic human failing.
