Summary

A US Department of Justice investigation found the Memphis Police Department routinely violates the rights of Black residents, including excessive force and discrimination.

The inquiry followed the 2023 death of Tyre Nichols, who was fatally beaten by five officers during a traffic stop, sparking national protests and reform demands.

Memphis officials have opposed federal oversight via a consent decree, citing legal concerns and potential costs to the city.

Similar DOJ investigations in other cities have revealed patterns of misconduct and racial discrimination in policing practices.

No worries cops, Tump will install a new DOJ and then you won’t have to worry what anyone thinks about how you treat those uppity *******. This can go on the pile with the rest of the social progress we’ve made.

You could write that headline for years. It’s like saying there are good blues clubs and BBQ joints in Memphis.

      For almost 150 years, even.

As long as black people have had rights in the US, there’s been cops violating their rights.

      ESPECIALLY in states like Tennessee.

Kind of funny to say, but I’ve found that cops in the south treat everyone equally as bad, there are just more black populations in some places.

I feel like you could delete “Memphis” from that headline and it would be correct in a disturbingly vast number of cities.

Not too much of a surprise.
