USAmerican revisionism is alive and well.
Was Japan big in research in the 60s and 70s? I always thought they were big in manufacturing, engineering, electronics etc? I’ve never heard about fundamental research in maths or computer science… Which is kind of the point of the article. But I wonder if that research happened for some (local) industry demand or if it’s some pure (academic) research. And the whole context.
It was seen as very applied and not particularly fundamental research at the time.
But with the benefit of hindsight this was one of the many starts of modern machine learning.
