Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) is getting some heat after video footage showed her in close contact with a male companion at a Beetlejuice musical from which she was booted after allegedly vaping in front of a pregnant woman. That companion is reportedly the owner of a pro-LGBT bar that has hosted a dra…

I mean, I’d argue this should be celebrated, not used as a burn. I get the angle on hypocrisy here, but framing LGBT support as a mistake or flaw, as unintentional as it may be, doesn’t really sit right, imo.

I really do wish the headline had pointed out the hypocrisy on her part and not with phrasing that reads as being pro-LGBT is bad.

I wouldn’t call it “support” with out learning more.

He owns a bar. He’s a businessman. Who makes profit of vice. And who, apparently, gets off groping tits at a family theater

Same deal with target- neither give a flying fig about lgbtq issues…. They just want to make money. Target by selling merch, this guy by selling a burlesque show.

LGBT support is framed in the context of showing how much of a giant lying cunt Boebert is. I didn’t at all take any inference to it being framed as a mistake or flaw in a negative context from this article or the title. People seem to get rabidly defensive on every position, everywhere, all of the time now.

This is my position, too. I’m pretty sensitive to social homophobia and transphobia, and this headline, to me, is calling out Bobo and not her boyfriend (although I would question his taste). Now admittedly, you’d have to know who Bobo is in order to get that. If it was about AIC’s boyfriend owning a gay bar, that’d literally be a different story. However, I don’t think you can squeeze too much context into a headline without using a queerty or the root style headline like “Fame-hungry homophobe Boebert caught publicly masturbating gay bar owner in children’s musical!”

Honestly, I’m never sure how much of their crap is performative and how much is serious, but honestly even the serious stuff is actually performative.

I didn’t go past the paywall, but I’m not seeing anything against LGBTQ+ people in the headline. I read it like when some male “family values” politician is caught shaking up with another man - it really is the hypocrisy that’s the issue.

Like many of her ilk, Bobert doesn’t really give a shit about the things she screams about; it’s political theater designed whip up the base, and this situation makes that obvious to anyone paying attention.

Double-edged sword: The title is belittling to LGBT readers, but also Boobert’s simple-minded base will use this as reason to drop support for her.

It’s almost like the culture war is completely manufactured and the people perpetuating it don’t actually give a shit because they’re just playing the grift for their own benefit.

Remember kids, the only solidarity is class solidarity and rich people understand that better than you.

Okay but there’s a bit of a gap between “He’s extra polite to the waitstaff when he thinks there are cameras watching” and “she publicly decries drag queens as child sex criminals but commits sex crimes in front of children with someone who owns a drag bar”. I agree that it’s a difference of degree rather than kind but differences of degree matter.

      That’s the whole point.

Say whatever will get the conservative people angry.

For decades stirring up fear and hatred for gay and lesbian people was a sure vote winner for the right wing.

Once gay marriage and relationships became acceptable (relatively, I am not dismissing the hardships LGB people still face) in much of the west, they needed a new group to focus that hate to rile up their supporters and suddenly all the hateful shit was shifted to trans people.

Most that spout this hatred to get elected, do not believe it.

And the most upsetting part of all this is that I cannot for the life of me decide who is more dangerous, but somehow I find the ones that the true believers less evil than these pieces of shit that are just doing it for power.

Don’t get me wrong, fuck the true believers too, but I can at least wrap my mind around why they suck. If you truly believe in your bones that abortion is baby murder I fully understand why you would want to stop it, it’s obviously not and believing so is fundamentally stupid just to be clear.

The Bobert’s of the world enable those people’s worst impulses because they don’t give a shit about the consequences so long as they benefit. And that’s just so much worse to me somehow, it’s the Henry Kissinger of it all

The true believers are misguided fools. That doesn’t make them any less contemptible, but the ones who do it for craven political reasons but don’t actually believe it are far worse.

Both need each other. And I don’t think the line is as clear as we’d like it to be. It’s a lot easier to be a true believer when you get something out of it, even if you would’ve believed regardless. And it’s rare someone is so bluntly sociopathic that they’ll hurt people for power without convincing themselves they’re doing what they believe in. The more power this gets them the more they believe in it. The other alternative would be to convince yourself if you don’t someone else will, and that’s more the never trump to defeatedly campaigning for him folks. So what does she believe in? What’s most convenient without being too far from what she’s recently believed?

Personally I think she’s a true believer about guns for sure, maybe about taxes on businesses, but everything else no. Maybe she’s uncomfortable with queer people but not more than she’s uncomfortable with not getting some fresh dick after her divorce. She’s unlikely to go full Anita Bryant, but she’s definitely willing to do a ton of harm

At this point, the conservative wing of North America is caught up in its own “gotcha” moments where they think uncovering hypocrisy is how you win elections. The left seems sort of preoccupied with that as well. I say, fuck hypocrisy, all politicians are going to exhibit it at some point. Let’s focus on dismantling bad policy and educating people about class consciousness.

So recently Bobo said she was done with MAGA, and now the BF owns a pro-LGTBQ bar… Could it be that he is bringing some (and I mean a little bit) of sanity to trailer park barbie? Maybe this is a good thing and we get a less radical – but still idiotic Bobo

I think you’re being far too generous. She’s only done with MAGA because it’s getting less popular and her seat is in danger. She has to appeal to a broader group of people to get elected. She never believed the crap she said (look at her personal life before going for office), she was just using it. He didn’t make her see any light - she remains as self-serving as ever, and she never gave a crap about LGBTQ+ issues in the first place.

The only way that anything gets done in politics is compromise, so I guess we shouldn’t be too surprised that politicians are willing to compromise their values as well? Politicians that don’t aren’t very successful, so most people in these positions are flexible and moldable, like bags of clay…or shit.

The first part of your sentence is true, but I reject the second. Compromise is essential to getting things done in any group venture. I’ve worked in a large aerospace engineering organization for almost four decades, with a third of that as a manager, and we have to make compromises to reach consensus all the time, but we don’t compromise on our values. For instance, on a program with tight funding or schedule, we might be willing to go with a riskier solution (with program concurrence), but not if that program is human rated or has safety concerns. We also don’t venture into areas that are unethical.

And besides, this isn’t Bobert compromising her values (if she, in fact, has any). Do you really think she honestly cares about the LGBTQ+ stuff? She only cares about it to the extent that it’s a MAGA boogie man. It’s a tool to whip up the base. It’s amazing anyone takes her family values schtick seriously given that her husband’s exposed himself to her and some other girls at a bowling alley when they were underage and he wasn’t, she went on to marry him, had a kid as a teenager, and that kid knocked up a girl as a teenager too, so now she’s a grandmother. “Values.”

So this isn’t some change in values; the Bobert that is rude to the people around her in a theater, pulling her boobs out, and groping a club owner is the real Bobert - the MAGA family values persona is just an act.

politicians are willing to compromise their values as well

98% of American voters compromise their values every two years by voting for political parties who, as a rule, vote against their constituencies.
