State 41 - South Dakota

Black Hills Raptor Center - Rapid City, SD

We’re in the final 10 states! I’ve been waiting to show these 2, they’re super cute and have great names. Lil Red is naturally the red morph screechie on there left, and Wolfie is the grey morph on the right.

This center isn’t open for regular visits, but they do a few events a year, including Owl-o-ween this weekend, and the Ride for Raptors car and motorcycle event. Keep an eye on the Facebook if you’re interested in events.

Big Bad Wolf (or “Wolfie”) exhibits the brown/gray patterning more common in the western portion of the bird’s range. Like Little Red, Wolfie sustained head trauma and resulting mental and vision issues.

”Little Red” has no vision in one eye, and it is limited in the other. The injury was likely caused by a collision with a vehicle. She came to the Raptor Center from Raptor Rehabilitation of Kentucky, Inc. in Louisville.

I love seeing all the success stories as I go through the pages of all these rescues. They’re mainly all volunteers, and most of these places receive no public funding, it’s all donations. Some post stats of how many animals they treat and the cost per species it takes to rehab them, and it’s amazing what they get done.
