One of the things I miss from the Reddit coffee subreddit was the weekly bean recommendation threads so I’d thought I’d ask on here, what’s everyone brewing this week?
I just finished a bag of Burundi Long Miles Gaharo Hill from Oynx Coffee Lab (https://onyxcoffeelab.com/products/burundi-long-miles-gaharo-hill?variant=40261580226658) that I made Kalita pour overs with.
That Onyx looks nice. I honestly haven’t expanded beyond my local roasters but maybe I will try mail ordering a bag for once. Speaking of local roasters though (I’m in Portland), this is one of my go-to coffees: https://shop.coavacoffee.com/collections/coffee/products/kilenso
I also like Kalita Wave, but tend to default to V60 because my Wave is the 1-cup size and I’m usually brewing for my partner too :) That said I also switch off between paper V60 and a metal cone (made by Coava actually… yeah I like those folks).
I’ve always thought about getting a V60, do you notice any big difference in taste or convenience?
Alright, I just ordered two bags from Onyx (the Burundi, and the Geometry). Can’t wait! Thanks for the recommendation.
It’s not different enough from the Wave (imho) to justify getting it, unless you just like experimenting. I think the Wave might be a little easier to be consistent with, from what I’ve heard? It might be a little easier to find V60 filters than Kalita–might be the main advantage :)
Is this the metal cone filter you’re talking about? I find I vastly prefer the taste of coffee brewed with a metal filter to paper, but the only metal filters I have are single cup. I’m also usually brewing for two, so I’m very interested in one that’ll fit my Bodum Chemex knockoff!

That’s the one! I haven’t compared it to other metal cones, but I like it. It fits right in the 02 v60.
My wife’s niece and husband were in town this weekend, so I roasted some of my personal favorite beans (as of late) to share with them. QT Shopping LLC Himalayan Arabica, grown in Nepal. Only coffee grown outside the coffee belt and also the highest elevation grown coffee in the world.
Taste wise, very similar to Jamaican Blue Mountain, with slightly less acidity.
Those sound amazing, I’ve never had a Nepal coffee before. What were the flavor notes like?
Earthy, dark chocolate and a hint of caramel. Minimal (almost non-existent) acidity. Sold on Amazon, both roasted and green.
I got the mystery beans from Foundry in the UK. It seems to be a natural process if some kind with tiny little beans. The ferments notes work especially well as espresso.
What’s your espresso set up look like?
Gaggia Classic (with PID mod) - Mahlkonig/Baratza Vario, which I recently swapped from ceramic to steel burrs.
Have you tried the whiskey barrel–aged coffee from Dark Woods? If so, are they similar by any chance?
Haven’t tried that one, but apparently that’s a washed-process with vanilla listed first in the tasting notes so I’m gonna say no, I don’t think it’d be similar.
- Rogue Wave Abu Gesha (about to finish this off)
- Rogue Wave Doi Seket
- Hydrangea El Paraiso Decaf
And then these just arrived:
- Sey Heza Mutana Hill Fellow drop
- Flower Child Carlos Ramon Diaz pink bourbon
- Flower Child Urrao Especial Chiroso
It’ll be a bit before I should be brewing the Flower Child ones, though. The Sey gets a little bit of a head start at least.
Gotta be honest, if I didn’t know I was in a coffee sub, I’d think you were talking about Anime Ability finishers.
I really like Rogue Wave and Sey, good brands and roasters!
Ha, I’d just suggested to [email protected] that we should have regular bean recommendation threads right before I saw your post! I think it’s a great idea, and we should do it regularly :)
The Cats Pyjamas from 7 Miles Coffee in Sydney.
It’s a really smooth blend of coffees from Colombia, Costa Rica, Indonesia and Guatemala.
I like a good blend and the design of the bag!
Im enjoying the Nestor Lasso from Prodigal this week. These prodigal roasts have been fantastic and they ought to be at their price point (10+ cents per gram). Not sure I’ll reorder often due to the cost but the coffee has been Extremely Enjoyable.
Coffee is one of those things that the price truly does reflect quality usually. It’s hard to go back to folgers after having a few high quality beans.
Publik Coffee in Salt Lake City has some ridiculously delicious and unique roasts. I’ve been hooked on Beekeeper.
For good but relatively cheap in the U.S.: Whole Foods Pacific Rim/Vienna Roast. It’s dark but not burned-tasting. Brews up beautifully in a French press.
Sounds like some great beans! Gonna have to order some but I have never roasted before. Though since joining this sub, I kinda want to give it a go. Have you tried any of their pre-roasted?
Oynx is a roaster! All their beans are roasted by them. They’re a very third wave type of roasters so lots of fruity and floral flavors and light roasts.
Do you mean coffee bean from the US? I live in Indonesia, and I do have a lot of recommendations. But I don’t know whether they can ship it to US.
Just mention the country it’s available in/from. It’ll be interesting to someone.
It’s Indonesian coffee, Sunda beans (West Java), very sweet, especially if brewed using clever dripper.
Yes, I’d like to just hear what y’all have been into recently
Recently tried Taylor’s Colombian San Sebastian beans. I wasn’t expecting too much but for $8/225g it specified a collective of farmers and was roasted fairly light. (Package said light, but definitely more of a medium). Tasted pretty unique too with some acidity.
Especially recently with inflation, a cheap good bag of coffee is starting to become harder to get. At least in the states at the moment.
