It’s a religion problem. Vulnerable people make easier victims for the collared crooks so they have an interest in promoting misery. Tell them that their troubles are a result of sin and take credit for the incremental improvements that come when you bounce off the rock-bottom times in life.

Never mind all the time and money spent obstructing things like access to contraception and abortion that could have turned mountains back into molehills.
