I was there, I saw the thread. @TheDude, did you? It was pretty strongly in favour. Do we really need to keep waiting around to see if an instance administrated by a guy who wants to declare “cis” a slur is going to turn out okay?

I think (don’t hold me to it, I’m still trying to work this all out) you can block instances. I blocked lemmyNSFW. Or at least I tried to. But yeah, block communities if you can’t block instances. Or only browse your subscription list. It’s really not hard to keep your feed racist/sexist/transphobic/homophobic/porn free.
