Well you don’t need a “modern” gpu, an RTX 2060 or 5700xt would give better performance on most games. In which case, I’ve spent more on Xbox Live Gold in 5 years ($~70 each year for 5 years, around $350) and just the subscriptions cost about $100-150 more than a 5700xt assuming mostly yearly payment. Plus there’s the fact that you can actually do anything on a PC, most game development is targetted towards PC and you can get a lot more (indie) games, PC games are infinitely more modabble because of the tight restrictions that are put on consoles that prevent the user from doing anything the console companies don’t like, and you can obviously use it for everything other than games. And you can pirate anything on PC, you can’t on Xbox or PlayStation, and you obviously can run your own FOSS OS & software.
There is absolutely 0 reason to pay for a console in this day and age, it’s caveman technology and costs far more in the long run. The only reasons to stay are artificial, either your friends exclusively play consoles and you can’t play with them if you only have a PC, or artificial restrictions like games agreeing with Sony/Microsoft to exclusively launch on one platform for a few years.
If you’re a person who doesn’t do literally anything other than gaming, and you only play single-player or free games, then a console might not be a detrimentally bad use of money, but otherwise it is just a waste of $600 plus hundreds of dollars of subscriptions.
