[Update - Resolved] Debian 12: how do I get Gnome Files to display preview thumbnails/icons for large video files? Right now it just shows generic icons

I resolved the problem by switching from Gnome Files (which is the default File Manager of Debian 12) to Thunar.

Go to Edit > Preferences > Side Pane > Image Preview Mode (gives you two choices: Embedded or Standalone):
