People are under a very wrong impression that “having a gun makes me safe.” It so fucking does not.

If your firearm is in a backpack, you absolutely do not have time to retrieve it before an attacker is upon you. If you are holding the firearm in your hand, and your attacker is less than about 20 feet away from you, they can easily get the jump on you. If you have a gun, now any conflict situation you become a part of includes a gun. If you have a gun, there is now a chance that that gun could be used against you.

This is the point that gun defense folks don’t understand and needs to be enforced: distance is ephemeral, a luxury, and time is usually against the defender in a stand off.

But these same folks are also the same crowd that says they can win in a fight with a bear. They have no concept of reality.

Talk to Lewis and Clark about grizzly bears. They’re no fucking joke.

Plus the little fact that you’re insanely more likely to shoot yourself or someone else accidentally than ever use it in a self defense situation.

You’re right. I was only addressing the scenarios where one might “be in danger,” and showing how possessing a firearm usually doesn’t make you safer in such a scenario.
