Stuart Christie, born on this day in 1946, was a Scottish anarchist writer and publisher, known for authoring “Granny Made Me an Anarchist” and attempting to assassinate the Spanish fascist Francisco Franco at the age of eighteen.

Encouraged by local radicals in the United Kingdom, Christie left for Spain at the age of eighteen to assassinate Franco. Upon arriving, Christie was arrested while carrying explosives. Charged with “banditry and terrorism”, he served three years of a twenty year sentence before international pressure won him an early release.

Christie was also known for his 2004 book “Granny Made Me an Anarchist” and went on to found the Cienfuegos Press publishing house and the online Anarchist Film Channel, which hosts films and documentaries with anarchist and libertarian socialist themes.
