MENOMINEE COUNTY, Mich. (WLUC) - Former Menominee County Sheriff’s Deputy and School Resource Officer Brian Helfert was sentenced to prison in Menominee County Circuit Court Thursday afternoon for a child sex crime charge a jury convicted him of in December.

Helfert was sentenced by Judge Mary Barglind for the charge of second degree criminal sexual conduct with a weapon. He was found guilty of committing the crime against a former student, now 33-years-old, who was a teenager at the time he said Helfert sexually assaulted him.

“It is the decision of this court, Mr. Helfert, that you be sentenced to the Michigan Department of Corrections for a minimum period of nine years to a maximum of 15 years with credit for 757 days served,” Barglind said.
