It will now rely on The Athletic for its sports coverage.
I guess it makes sense, but it seems strange that they bought an online newspaper to replace their internal department.
According to the article:
The staff of The Athletic will now provide the bulk of the coverage of sporting events, athletes and leagues for Times readers and, for the first time, articles from The Athletic will appear in The Times’s print newspaper. [emphasis mine]
So I guess it makes sense if they are going to print the articles too.
I was considering that $3.99/mo All Access bundle (for the first year) almost exclusively because they took over the Athletic (I also like playing Wordle). I wonder how many additional subscribers the Athletic is bringing to the Times, and if printing those articles will have a positive effect on subscriptions as opposed to their old sports department.
