Hey everyone. Today I started noticing some people from eviltoast.org spamming the same message over and over again in comment sections (might even be the same person). I took a look at their instance and it doesn’t seem to be a very old instance, and it seems like its not a bad place, except for this spammer. I already blocked one account but not too long after encountered the account in the link above. So after I block this guy too, and after reading this comment thread it seems its a bot and they will simply be back with more accounts. What do we do in this situation? Is the only option to simply block them every time we encounter one of their accounts?
They were also using an account at lemmy.ca and one other instance as well so an instance block would be a cat and mouse game and potentially give the spammer what they want (causing havock, defederations, amd users to be cut off from entire instances), I think for now we just have to block if mods and admins aren’t able to catch it quick enough. Long term I think Lemmy needs some kind of anti spam system since even the most basic system would be able to catch this one, because they’re using the same set of words it would be a slam dunk for the most basic system.
I been banning the accounts (and removing everything they have posted) as I randomly come across them/they get reported. So if you report the account everything will get removed as soon as I see it. They been spamming from other instances not just eviltoast.org tho.
If they’re all using the same IP, block them by IP. If that’s even possible at an admin level (obviously not by mod or user level)
There most recent activity is from 18 days ago the rest average a month most recent.
I’m thinking they don’t have a registration application so Anyone is signing up and using their instance to spam others.
I would temporarily block them until you get a hold of the instance admin because it’s probably abandoned
Couple of us have defederated until they have more security in place.
