People in Republican-voting states were more likely to report adverse events after receiving a Covid-19 vaccination than people living in Democratic-leaning states, a new analysis finds, suggesting that how people view their post-vaccine side effects or decide whether to report them may be shaped by their political views.
The cross-sectional study, published Friday in JAMA Network Open, looked at more than 620,000 entries in the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System from 2020 through 2022 and found that a 10% increase in ballots cast for a Republican in the last presidential election was associated with a 5% increase in the odds that an adverse event after Covid vaccination would be reported, a 25% increase in odds that a severe adverse event would be reported, and a 21% increase in the odds that any reported adverse event would be severe.
“It’s all part of this incredible polarization that’s politically charged,” Eric Topol, founder and director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, told STAT. He was not involved in the study. “The fact that they’re reporting a significant increase in states that are Republican is just consistent with everything we’ve seen in the pandemic.”
I am hardcore supporter of vaccines, I received and encouraged everyone I know to get the COVID vaccines. They absolutely wreck me, every time, every booster I am knocked down for weeks… I still support them and they are still better than real covid… But don’t think that people complaining of side effects are making it up, please
I guess me thinking they’re making it up depends on what they’re saying the side effects are.
I also think people might be more prone to complain about a side effect given their political persuasion. Like, if you watch Fox and they constantly talk about VAERS and all the side effect, you’re primed to think about it and probably primed to complain/report it
Antivaxers are liars, so when you hear their stories about vaccines injuries that last months or years it’s always fishy. I heard about ones that never get too specific on what the injuries are, you can’t prove it or debunk it. I don’t think it’s an issue dismissing information from liars like antivaxers.
But yeah, I’m sure there are people that get injured from the needle or have a lasting side effects or whatnot. Any reasonable person would accept a very tiny risk if it can help keep them out of the hospital.
So the vaccine is targeting conservatives!?!?
