Question:
Hi Mark, laughing jasper flint is a lizard rather than a viashino, is viashino being phased out in favor of lizard? If so will older viashino be errata’d to match?
Answer:
The Viashino creature type has been changed to Lizard. The creatures are still Viashino from a flavor standpoint.
This follows their phasing out of Nagas to Snake
What do you think? Good move to simplify things or is removing creature types a step too far?

Question:
Why should types that are original Magic IP like Viashino be folded into generic types like Lizard, but the same is not true for UB types like Astartes or Cyberman? Is there no value to building resonance for Magic’s IP?
Answer:
The Viashino are still flavorfully Viashino. It’s still a unique race of creatures. That’s what they’re called. All we’re changing is their creature type. We’ve decided to be consistent with how we’re labeling animal humanoids such that they and their animal equivalent are connected typally.
It makes sense but I still don’t like it. Viashino Sandstalker is one of my most beloved cards!
A sad day, as I love the Magic unique types.
And while Loxodon isn’t a typed type… Viashino, Homarid, Cephalid… were.
Are all my homarids lobsters now? Cephalid squids or octopodes? Why not roll Skeletons and zombies into undead? /oldman
Edit: but it does make them match Leonin and Loxodon. So consistent, I guess.
