Had Linux support too! (From day 1? Not sure…)
I had a copy, and during undergrad I figured out that I could copy it over to
/tmp
on a computer in the University’s Linux cluster — no root required. They were high end machines at the time (Xeons with Quadro cards I think?), and UT2K4 played great on them.I’m pretty sure the Linux support was on day one. I was running Linux back then and played it quite a bit and it worked great.
There was a remake being done but it suffered when the battle royale craze hit
Specifically it was being made by Epic back when Fortnite was a PvE tower defense game. Once they started to dabble in the BR genre, they redirected all available resources to the money printer. Can’t say I blame them, but I was really looking forwards to the potential of an open source UT game. Modding scene was gonna be lit.
They’re making so much money with Fortnite they could pick up this project again silently and release a finished product to the fans that were let down.
I played it a few weeks ago. It needs a modern reboot tho with 8k and ray tracing but it’s still pretty solid. 1999 GOTY was the real jam tho
Played this a few months ago. Still slaps
It’s still one of the only games I’ve ever been able to play with friends and will always be a treasured memory
UT2004 was so good. So smooth and so much replayability, and then add mods and it’s even better.
I still break out UT99 with some mates via Hamachi from time to time.
Arena shooters need a renaissance
Still waiting for a good remake.
It happened. It was called Unreal Tournament 4 and played better than anything before
One of my most played games and the one I’ve lost ability to enjoy. Even UT99 and Quake games don’t make me feel myself as old and slow as UT2004.
