Democrats stymied after state supreme court rules that 1864 law with no exceptions for rape or incest can go into effect

Arizona’s state Republican leadership halted an effort by Democrats on Wednesday to repeal an 1864 law banning almost all abortions, which the state supreme court this week ruled could go into effect.

The move came after Republican lawmakers in the state had denounced the court’s decision, including some who previously expressed support for the law. Donald Trump and other high-profile Republicans, such as the Senate candidate Kari Lake, had also declared their opposition to the ruling with Lake urging lawmakers to “come up with an immediate commonsense solution that Arizonans can support”.

“I am disgusted by the actions of my peers, both lying about their stance on this issue so important to Arizonans, and refusing to repeal the 1864 ban,” said Priya Sundareshan, a Democratic senator and Arizona Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee co-chair.

Dems will just put forth another anti abortion candidate because a progressive tried to run. They did it in Texas and they will do it in AZ.

??? Which candidate in Texas are you talking about? Admittedly, I’m newer to Texas politics, but Beto O’Rourke was pro reproductive rights. So is Colin Allred.

Edit: Also Mike Collier seemed to be campaigning on women’s rights as well, though his main issue was the grid.

Gross! I just looked him up! He legit said in black and white “I do not support abortion however we cannot have an outright ban”, and still got the House DNC to back him up?! He only supports the rape/incest/risk to mother - no support for women not in a financial position to raise a child!

Ugh, man, sometimes I get really optimistic about Texas pulling its head out of its ass, but more often than not I’m reminded as to why that’s just simple copium as someone stuck here.

He’s also under federal investigation and had his home raided and the DNC still supported him. All because the women running against him supported universal Healthcare.
