TLDR the article ranks:
-
Road Warrior
-

-
Furiosa
-
Mad Max
-
Beyond Thunderdome
I personally don’t like slotting enjoyment of movies into hard ranked categories. Movies can have aspects that are kind of prismatic, where depending on my mood at the time of thinking about them I might like or dislike what they’ve done. Beyond Thunderdome is a movie with a lot of these elements. It is in many ways a great and perfect third movie in the original series, being the furthest along in the timeline and showing humanity and civilization have gone the most awry from present day. It does a lot to retroactively shape perceptions of the Mad Max franchise that people tend to ignore.
And that’s just a preamble to an actually discussion about one of the movies.
I think my list will upset most people. I don’t like the first two movies at all.
- Fury Road
- Thunderdome
The other 3 don’t matter because I have no plans to see Furiosa and no plans to ever re-watch the first two movies. And I’m in the middle of watching/re-watching my entire film collection.
Upvoted for a hot take. I think I agree with you about the first one - it’s kinda like a western but it’s low budget in a way that has aged badly* and overstays its welcome.
*Easy Rider would be an example of a low budget film that has aged well imo

Pffft. Fury Road was the best movie in a decade, let alone in the MM franchise. I’m going Friday to see Furiosa. I hope it’s half as good.
Just got out of Furiosa. It’s about 75% as good, I reckon.
I’m going 65% - which is still good by modern movie standards. But we rewatched Fury Road for the first time in years last night to get ready and I just love the shit out of that movie.
Here’s my ranking.
- Road Warrior/Mad Max
- Beyond Thunderdome
- Fury Road
