I have this cool Isekai idea called:

“I bought a faulty map, got hired by the Queen of Spain and landed in a new World?”

Isekai is wish fulfillment plus doing worldbuilding and exposition simultaneously without having a disembodied narrator

It’s efficient for the format it takes place in, and why a lot of lazy game narration gives in-world characters amnesia

Of all the fantasy show premiering this year, how many are of them are Isekai?

This is one of the reasons why Frieren is so popular. Aside from excellent visuals and intelligent writing, it’s proper fantasy in a sea of Isekai.

Lets just use this season. fantasy: Elf bride, (kinda maybe Sci-fi fantasy mix, its… Something at least and interesting for shure) train to the end of the world, (also kinda chilling in another world with lv2 but that’s more of a stretch, guy got from one fantasy world to another), 7th Prince (same world reincarnation isn’t isekai), Spice and Wolf, the banished former hero, unnamed memory, (maybe, cause idk if it counts as fantasy or Sci-fi) date a life, delicious in Dungeon, The Irregular at Magic High School (Sci-fi but with magic so i would count it as fantasy), The Misfit of Demon King Academy (same world reincarnation).

Maybe there are some more but i don’t have those on my list. And i would say there are some great fantasy that are also isekai, jobless reincarnation is definitely great and the isekai part isn’t stupid. Re:Monster, the new Gate are also good and there are some more.

I don’t like the isekai hate, they are popular for a reason and as long as they are made good (like in not written like shit) they are also good fantasy. Like when Fern for example would be a reincarnation or traveler, would that change how good the story is would that change much?

(Separate response to address what you said about good Isekai.)

Yes, I absolutely agree that there are good and bad Isekai just like there are good and bad Fantasy.

The issue with Isekai at a fundamental level is that, probably, 95% of them don’t actually need to be Isekai. It’s just an extra, unneeded step.

In the case of Mushuko Tensei, Rudeus’ ability to read Japanese actually plays into the plot. That, plus the whole overarching therapy plot, gives purpose to the Isekai property of that show.

Most good isekai do make good plot points about the isekai. There is of course bad stuff, but there is also regular bad fantasy and other stuff. When isekai is just a start it just is a start, doesn’t make the story bad necessarily doesn’t make it good either, its just a start to the story.

Point of order: Reincarnation, especially how it’s commonly used in Anime, falls under the Isekai banner regardless of where the MC is reincarnated to or from.

And that’s a great deal of the pointlessness of Isekai. If someone being reincarnated or being brought from another world doesn’t change the story for better or worse… why is it necessary?

“I was a salaryman in Toky-” Just start out as a kid living on a farm!

“We have to summon the Great Heroe-” Start the Anime from the Priests’ perspective and don’t even say where the Heroes came from!

Then why are you mad about a plot point that is in your eyes pointless?

Also i named many without reincarnation/isekai (wich is not the same at all) its just from this season.

Mad is the wrong word to use.

I support the notion that Isekai is an oversaturated genre, when actual fantasy takes one less step and would do the job just as well.

I mean yes but remember the target audience, the target audience is in Japan and many of the Japanese people are kinda depressed if not borderline suicidal, isekai is basically a way to flee reality. This goes for the authors and the audience alike, they really don’t like our world.

For the same world reincarnation thats usually a bigger plot point and has more meaning.

For the very rare case of fantasy world to fantasy world… Thats either completely irrelevant or very very relevant, no in-between, wich is funny.
