Continuing the suppression of nuclear weapon use in wars is important for far, far more people than just Americans, or even just the west. A hostile use of nuclear weapons will trigger an extreme reaction from across the political and global spectrum.

Russia using a nuke should trigger a WW3 event. All vs Russia in this situation. The Western portion of Europe and beyond has been very kind by donating weapons and saying don’t use them on Russian territory. If Russia wants to use nukes I personally volunteer to press every single button to level Moscow, St Petersburg and beyond.
The US was clear that a use of just a singular nuclear weapon in Ukraine would result in an overwhelming kinetic response from the US toward Russian invaders in Ukraine. I can easily see other countries, particularly the Baltic states, going much, much harder than that from the outset.
Nukes cannot win the war for Putin, the only thing it can do is force Russia to lose in increasingly spectacular ways.
