South Africans voted on Wednesday in the most competitive election since the end of apartheid. High voter turnout was reported, with lines extending well into the night. Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo noted that turnout is expected to surpass the 66% seen in 2019.
Polling stations remained open past the official closing time of 9 PM to accommodate those still in line. By late evening, only 55% of stations had closed. Voters cited unemployment, crime, power blackouts, and corruption as reasons for considering opposition parties.
