The IDF is not a professional army. It’s mostly a bunch of kids straight out of high school. Of course, they’re goofy. Of course, they post cringe. They’re teens thrust into an insane situation. Think of yourself at that age and don’t judge them too harshly for their stupid crap.
Indoctrinated into hatred and dehumanization from an early age, given power with limited oversight, told to kill, probably assured that “they would do the same to you”.
Given the history of our species and the fact that we differ from our ancestors only in upbringing, the uncomfortable conclusion I can’t seem to avoid is that if like me, you haven’t been raised to be capable of horrific violence and dehumanization, you’re privileged - and in the grand scheme of things, people like us are all too rare.
I can’t allow myself to feel exactly sorry for these young men. It’s too much, and it’s not even my place to forgive them. I am just glad that my loved ones and I were not put to that test. Nobody should live a life in service of their darkest impulses.
To be fair, I did catch my older brother naked in mum’s bed with a pillow dressed in her underwear. Life is like that 🤡
