For a “foreign policy expert” Joe doesn’t know that Japan and Korea weren’t happily together and then split up after WWII. Japan actually took Korea by military force in 1910 and made it their colony. They destroyed Korean cultural sites, enslaved their people, took their land and gave it to Japanese citizens. Nobody in Korea, North or South, wants to get together with Japan ever again. JFC Joe!

Another day of americans popping up in my feed talking about how bad the other candidate is not realizing they both suck.

    I hate US elections…

I think this is likely a case of americans talking about how bad their own candidate is, but I can see how it would be shitty to have to see this shit ad nauseum.

I’m american and I hate US elections.

I came to lemmy because I was tired of all the political bot posts and trash takes, also the ads but that’s unrelated, but I guess it’s not all political bots, some people really are just that deranged

Japan and Korea have not been friends for a long fucking time. This is stupid as shit. Asia’s 3rd and 4th largest economies have gotten friendlier in the last couple of years so saying he would get them back together isn’t the gotcha you think it is.

      not even back then:

Major military efforts were taken by Kublai Khan of the Yuan dynasty in 1274 and 1281 to conquer the Japanese archipelago after the submission of the Korean kingdom of Goryeo to vassaldom. Ultimately a failure, the invasion attempts are of macro-historical importance because they set a limit on Mongol expansion and rank as nation-defining events in the history of Japan.

And you’re point being? Because of what happened a thousand years ago Biden can’t try to strengthen their relations? It is a good thing that Biden attempts that and Biden has done great work in that area. In 2023 for the first time in a long time the number of Japanese surveyed that thought positively of South koreans was greater than those who thought negatively. These surveys started in 2013 at 40% japanese thinking negatively of South Korea. Now it’s at 32% with a sharp decrease in 2022-2023.

my point, like i wrote, is that even during the mentioned “mongolian empire” they weren’t “together”

and that’s the entirety of what i meant. It was about history and not contemporary politics

i don’t care about biden and what he does or doesn’t

I read it as him referring to the split in each country, north and south Korea vs okinawa and japan. Okinawa has been looking sketch for way too long now, why cant it just attach to japan once and for all like we all assume it already has?

he wants to die as a president. His death would be historical, rather than anecdotal
