Trump’s financiers saw the writing on the wall: Trump was almost killed with no clear heir apparent, which would have killed the movement or stalled the Republicans long enough that Biden would win and Project 2025 would fail. They had to rush in someone young who would carry the torch when Don eventually dies.
No one was planning political optics. They were desperate for a replacement.

I think most people that write about politics, even those who know a bit more about politics think too deeply into it. On the other hand most voters just shoot from the hip. They will see a younger energetic face next to Trump and that will be enough.
