Israel bombs a building in Beirut with civilians in it, outside of Hezbolla controlled territory. Israel carries an assasination inside Iran of Hamas leader. Which is fair, but they did it during the inauguration of a new president all while they had foreign emissaries present in the country. Essentially embarrassing Iranian leadership in front of all their major allies, which is funny but Iran is forced to respond.
I don’t know what Israel’s calculus is, but sometimes I just don’t think there is any. As long as the United States keeps supporting them I don’t think Israel will ever practice mediating their behavior and they will continue murdering people in ways that are escalatory.
The calculus is that triggering a war will oblige the US to back them, and Gaza (and Bibi’s prosecution) will be overshadowed and forgotten.
I’m now waiting for all the dual citizens to call for an extraction flight out because they waited too long
