Incidentally, the first half of Émile Zola’s novel “The Downfall” covers the battles (from a footsoldier’s point of view) leading up to the moment pictured above. Project Gutenberg has a couple translations:
It was kind of fun reading it and following along on the wikipedia Battle of Sedan page. I only read the first half, can’t vouch for the rest of the novel.
