Eight people on a boat trying to cross from France to England have died after the vessel got into difficulties. Almost 50 people have died so far this year attempting the perilous journey, French authorities say.

I don’t get it. If you’re an immigrant who’s already made it to the EU, why would you want to go to England in the first place?

      As a Brit, that’s better.

Jokes aside, here’s a couple of reasons I can think off the top of my head.

      1. English is really common for people to speak as a second language. More likely to be drawn to a country where they have some chance of being able to communicate.

      2. they may have friends or family already here (maybe who’ve chosen the UK due to point 1). People are far more likely to go somewhere where they already know people.

l’d say the UK rather than England – they’d just cross at the closest point, which is into England.

Some people would rather be in the UK than the EU. Does all English, doesn’t do ID cards, and they may have family there.

I know a guy who did it. When he got to the end, they pulled him up into the boat and congratulated him heartily “You did it!” and all he could do was say “oh.”
