Who am I?

Hi, I’m Ajay. For the last 4 years, I’ve been working on SponsorBlock, an open-source privacy respecting browser extension and open API for skipping and identifying sponsors and other annoyances in YouTube videos. In June, I launched DeArrow, an extension targeting the next biggest annoyance on YouTube.

In January 2024, I will be graduating from university and hope to make SponsorBlock, DeArrow and future open-source user-focused tools my full time job. This DeArrow paywall is how I believe I’m going to make that possible.

With this paywall, I am trying to create a funding mechanism for my projects while still allowing universal access. That’s why if you cannot or do not want to pay, I still very much want you to be able to use DeArrow as much as anyone else using the button at the bottom. But, if you can pay, I would really appreciate you supporting the project.

I find the premise of this extension silly. A title isn’t a description and a bespoke thumbnail communicates much more than a video frame can. Imagine if movies were advertised like this

It’s a tool to help counter dark patterns on YouTube. Youtube heavily incentivises sensationalism, click bait and silly highly emotional faces on the cover picture.

It’s very interesting to see how much less enticing your home feed looks with this enabled. Give it a try, you might like it!

It is usually used to remove clickbaity titles or titles that don’t explain accurately what the video in question is about.

We can rewrite the titles to be less clickbaity or to be more informative about the video in question.
