    Explanation: In an incident known as the Asiatic Vespers, the ruler of the Kingdom of Pontus, Mithridates, decided to murder some 80,000 Roman civilians living in Anatolia (modern-day Turkiye).

    For some reason, this did NOT discourage the extremely warlike and vengeance-obsessed Roman Republic from its expansionist aims. How strange!
