We complain a lot about cars and the lack of transit options, but it’s nice to see a massive positive improvement taking shape. The REM was only announced in 2016, broke ground in 2018, and now the first segment is opening. It does a ton of things right: full grade-separation, automation, platform screen doors, top-notch accessibility features, high service frequency, good connectivity with existing rapid transit, and it’s all being built for a remarkably affordable price. This is a model of how more transit could be built.

I don’t even use public transit but I’m still excited for the REM. I dream of modern cities with great public transport.

Yeah, even those who drive benefit from great public transit. Every single person on transit is another person not contributing to traffic. Plus, who really wants to be forced to drive with a bunch of people who suck at and don’t enjoy driving? I don’t like driving and I’m not very good at it, so it’s best for everyone on the roads that I not be forced on the roads with them.

Plus it gives everyone stuck on the new Champlain something to watch go by!

Montreal knocking it out of the park yet again in terms of transportation. We had the REV and now the REM.

As someone from the Northshore towards the east, I am incredibly jealous of/happy for those who can use the REM in their day to day.

I’m in Griffintown, so thankfully I’m gonna be able to use it a lot. I really hope people riding it will spark desire for much more, like the poor orphaned REM de l’Est that got screwed over by NIMBYs. But yeah, things are certainly on an upward swing!
