AA missiles use proximity fuses that explode before impact and pepper the plane with shrapnal. Judging by the videos the pilots lost all controls of the plane and were pretty much flying it by individually throttling the engines. They did all they could and both of them died. It’s a miracle that anyone survived that crash.
