In a statement, FIDE said that its regulations, including its dress code, are “designed to ensure professionalism and fairness for all participants.”
Fairness? Nah, that’s to gatekeep who gets in. We all know that.
I’d argue that it’s not gate keeping. Anyone can get a very cheap pair of smart trousers at a charity shop. I bought a blazer worth £200 in perfect condition for £7 the other day.
I’d argue it’s more of an image issue. They want the tournament to look smart and professional, and whilst I get that, there’s a big movement within the chess community to make the game more attractive to new players, and part of that is to make look less like a “stiff old man’s game”.
That’s true today, but it is a rule that was created with the intention to gatekeep. The image of chess as an elitist sport is not spontaneous, it was manufactured to exclude and marginalize people away from their perfect sport. Then they wonder why chess popularity is in decline and tournaments see reduced number of participants year after year. Until the advent of internet streaming and online gaming, chess was in a death march. These ancient institutions don’t understand the world anymore and blindly reproduce traditions from a discriminatory, classist, sexist and racist past uncritically.
Maybe, but a dress code has a long history of being used to discriminate.
Carlsen told Take Take Take that he doesn’t plan to appeal the decision. “Honestly I’m too old at this point to care too much. If this is what they want to do I’ll probably set off to somewhere where the weather is a bit nicer,” he said.
Good take. Didn’t cause a huge fuss, just said “No I don’t think I will.” Considering the weight of his name it’s really their loss on what seems like an aging dress code. Honestly I feel like much of the popularity of chess today comes from completely “unprofessional” sources like twitch streamers and social communities where historically it was only championships and local clubs. As with anything, it’s adapt or die.
Where are the jeans memes round 2?
Round 2? I swear I’ve seen more round than that.
Magnus is wrong here. He’s basically demanding special treatment.
He didn’t have time to run to his hotel and back? Hell, Uber up a pair of pants. Someone can manage.
Because jeans are such a special garment in a game where you can’t see your opponents legs?
Maybe they needed to check for anal vibrators
It’s fine to talk about changing the rules. But you also shouldn’t make exceptions to the rules just for the popular players.
He doesn’t care about changing the rule as much as he wants to be treated like a diva. There are better ways for him to be using his power.
He didn’t demand anything. He knew the rules, decided he didn’t want to abide by them and left with out much of a fuss when disqualified.
The most popular player saying “fuck you” counts as a fuss.
I don’t see that he said fuck you anywhere in the article. He even agreed to meet the dress code for the event the next day bit the organization refused him. He just didn’t want to leave to change so he didn’t. Neither side was obligated to compromise on their values. It wasn’t even like he was dressed poorly in the pictures they have. Most of the people I work with at my office dress worse than that.
He did.
Is that a direct quote or just people interpreting his response?

I believe he’s said it more than once, but I’m not 100% on that.
Fair enough. Seems like there was more to it than just the dress code though. Sounds like that was the last straw.
