Please ignore the boring pessimistic individuals in the comments as they’re wasting energy attacking petitions. They won’t achieve anything meaningful in their lives.

I’m appreciative of the link ;)

I’m in an optimistic pessimistic mood right now so I upvoted both of you.

I have seen these petitions in action. It reaches the official responce threshold. The responce is

we looked at it and our answer is no

It reaches debate in commons. It’s scheduled for mid Wednesday morning and read out to 1 old duffer who went in there for a nap

Petitions show how popular ideas are and galvanize people into action.

Pessimism and apathy don’t do anything.

It lets someone feel smugly superior for not participating in a group activity, and usually that’s the hilight of their week.

I’m assimung someone who goes around to tell people “stop signing petitions” feels smugly superior? That should be pretty self evident.

Or are you thinking I meant “people who sign petitions are the ones who feel smugly superior” because that’s the exact opposite.

I just told you the exact process that happens.

Thes petitions are designed for the illusion of participation for us subjects

Petitions inform people about issues and serve as a good staging ground for grassroots protests.

There is that argument i guess. But this is the 2nd or 3rd pettition I have see on this subject. I signed the last ones. The responce from the government was something along the lines of its not our place to tell businesses what to do.

Out of all petitions I have signed and I know it comes off that I’m bored of the inaction (because I am) i do sign the ones that pique my interest in and have yet to see one that produced a different outcome tgat I outlined which includes 1 or 2 that breached 7 digits worth of signatures.

The performance i have seen from that new government is a change in name only

Wee after thought Edit. If they gave a shit they could have turned up to the “debate” when they were in opposition. It’s the literally same people

In December 2011, a fourth-grade class in Brookline, Massachusetts, launched the “Lorax Petition Project” through Change.org requesting Universal Studios to include a more vital environmental message on its website and trailer for its upcoming film, The Lorax, based on the classic Dr Seuss children’s story. The petitioners felt that the website and trailer lacked an important message from the book, “to help the environment.” The petition collected over 57,000 signatures, and on January 26, 2012, the studio updated the website “with the environmental message the kids had dictated.”

On May 30, 2020, a petition titled “Justice for George Floyd” was created after unarmed African-American George Floyd was murdered by police, leading to mass protests. The petition earned over 19 million signatures, making it the most signed petition in the platform’s history, surpassing the Article 13 opposition petition over a year earlier.

On July 3, 2015, a 14-year-old girl began a petition to ensure that domestic violence prevention is covered in the Australian curriculum. The campaign was started to raise awareness for people who were unaware they were domestic violence victims. After the campaign, Minister Pru Goward announced that the school districts would introduce domestic violence education into schools. The campaign had 101,747 supporters.

And what the fuck did the petition do? Protests work, petitions don’t do shit. If anything, petitions hinder progress because it makes people feel like they’ve done something and sit back down instead of going to protests.

          So whining is better huh.

You’re conjuring up a strawman saying people don’t pursue further action after signing the petition.

A petition is very literally nothing more than whining. Go protest.

How about you stop wasting energy trying to discourage people with your negativity. The people who sign petitions are the most likely to protest on the issue.

The people who sign petitions are the most likely to protest on the issue.

And the people who are on the edge of protesting might choose not to because they get a sense of accomplishment from signing and sharing the petition.

How about you stop wasting energy trying to get people to performatively do nothing instead of getting out and actually make themselves heard?

                Pointless bullshit should be derided.

if you have protest without petition or some other clear way what you want to be done, you are just whining.
