Fuckin idiots. I minored in ASL and if you signed without using your face and body, you’d fail out. It’s such an important part of what you’re saying.
Two deaf people can be discussing the death of a child and there will still be moments where they look straight up happy
Is there a benefit to using ASL interpreters as opposed to closed captioning?
Yes. It’s as different as watching a speech vs reading it.
Example: “That’s a great idea” is how it would be written whether it was meant seriously or not. An ASL interpretor would exaggerate the signs and use their face to convey the sarcasm.
My opinion is that if the information gets a press conference, they think it’s important enough to convey with inflection and deaf viewers deserve the same.
