They do, actually. In the US, you technically don’t own your land. The government does, and they can take and do whatever they want with it. The only benefit is that under the 5th Amendment, you have to be compensated for what they take. However, the government also controls land value, so what they see as compensation and what you see as compensation are 2 separate things
Government doesn’t control land value. No government body says “New York has to be expensive!” or “Texas needs to be cheap as shit!”
The real estate market is based on what people will pay. It’s mind blowing people think that there is a government department that no one has ever heard of making decisions everyone would be talking about. This is capitalism.
