I’m a hot Toronto girl who just wants your money.
One of the giveaways for me was the complete ignorance of the Canadian post-secondary system.
She said that she’s taking pre-health sciences at George Brown College. College in Canada means community college (which George Brown is). You take a course, typically 1-3 years, with a specific goal in mind.
Also, Canadian universities do not offer pre-med or pre-health sciences tracks. You get a degree in chemistry, biology, or whatever, and apply for med school irrespective of the program you are in. One of my classmates was accepted into medical school straight out of chemical engineering. Someone else I know was finishing a degree in Spanish literature when he was accepted into medical school.
My uninformed guess is the person posting this is NOT the person in the picture.
Most likely, it’s some weirdo’s bizarre roundabout way of harassing whoever’s picture this is.This makes sense to me because why else would they keep creating the same exact account on every instance and sending the exact same message?
That’s a totally different angle and I hate it. You need to be a special kind of jerk to post someone else’s picture in a spam message.
If you think about it: have you ever gotten a picture of the spammer itself in an spam message
If you click ln the socials she shares, she is active there and seems to match the profile picture with the content she uploads.
I never considered this, and I hope it’s not true.
When the cost to try something is virtually zero, you don’t have to try very hard. If only one in ten thousand people will fall for a scam, then millions of attempts will still get you thousands of successes.

Theres no millions to message though. Some of the accounts are the same people, just jumping servers to fine one that works for them.

Stupid question maybe but what’s the goal of this scam? The URLs seem safe, is the goal to convince us to send money to her?

Might be just someone wanting to highlight an architecture issue that allows someone to spam everyone.
I had seen posts like this circulating before so I tried to track them down:

Some of these posts suggest they are using the pictures of someone else on purpose. Some say they’re a bot. I personally haven’t gotten these messages but I don’t get DM’s so that’s probably why. I’m pretty positive this is some kind of Honeypot scam. Either way I wouldn’t trust it.
I’ve gotten 3 or 4 separate PMs from different alts of this account (same username but different instances) over at least a month now.
I just got one today. My lemmy client couldn’t even delete it or read it’s notification. Kinda hoping thats a bug if this is going to be a thing
