I would love a hybrid of my subscriptions and top posts. I’m still settling in from Reddit and I’m still to find out what’s out there.

Getting to grips with how to search for and find communities.

I just searched for some of the bigger servers, opened the communities tab and subbed every community I found remotely interesting. Was about 2-3h of work.

I forget that we aren’t using the “other” place where sorting by new is terrible

Being a smaller platform where the points don’t matter does make the “new” experience more enjoyable.

I’m using top in 12 hours, which fits better when you browse in the morning and in the evening.

I believe that it should be the other way around.

You have too much life, so you frivolously spend it on Lemmy.

Those with no life don’t have time for their own interests and hobbies.

That aside, understandable, have a good day.

I switch it based on circumstances. 12h in morning, 6h by noonish, 1h or new by 3pm.

The only thing I see now are memes. That’s what I dislike currently about Lemmy. People aren’t active in other communities most of the time. I am not here to enjoy a instagram-like feed, I am here to read and discuss, like in the forums.

This is one thing that Lemmy REALLY needs to work on. The hobby- and topic-specific communities need to grow. Lemmy is currently dominated by like 5-10 communities, which is fine, but it really falls short of the experience I had on Reddit in that regard.

In order for niche communities to have a sustainable flow of content, you need a massive amount of users overall. Another obstacle is that niche communities can’t grow much because with barely anyone in them, nobody has any reason to go to them.

I am pretty excited to slowly repost all my old content here over the course of several months to reap all those fake internet points again. It isn’t reposting if it is a new website.

that won’t change until the site expands enough to populate the smaller communities you are personally interested in and they fix the hot algorithm to be like reddits. right now hot is like rising, so it’s useless for finding the best content from the day. also problems with federating content from 12 copies of the same exact community copied to 8 instances fighting for the front page makes it even more stale.

My Fediverse experience became exponentially superior once I learned that the default sorting options were a bit shite compared to the alternatives.

Ok I came back ! It’s truly a life changing trick, approved. I’ve also experimented with top 12h, and it’s giving me good results too. Maybe switching to 24h in the future.

I wish Hot had a bit less post decay, it would be close to perfect then. Active doesn’t surface new posts often enough for me

I assume you’re just joking, but does that feature even exist in any Lemmy clients? Seems like the number of servers that don’t allow downvotes would make it useless anyway.

This is something that could be added to a client some day even if it won’t work on some instances. I’d use it on occasion.

It wouldn’t work on posts with more than 50 comments, unfortunately. That’s something the back-end has to offer.

… unless the client decides to proxy all calls and make its own aggregate…

I swap between top 24/12/6 depending on how long I’m away.

6 gets shitty because you start getting the random porn pretty quickly.

In the city worst things than that have happened and no one bats an eye. I’ve seen a homeless man wash his junk in the quick trip sink. I’ve seen a crate of homemade molotov cocktails just setting on the front porch. I’ve witnessed someone pull a gun out on someone else just for honking in traffic.

Nah, dont worry about it, its no problem. Just pointed out that i thought it was kinda random. If yah wanna keep talking then i can hear ya. Cities can be kinda wild sometimes. The one im at right now has had wild shit happened like bombings on multiple gas stations in the same day. A bridge was taken by the river with people on it and i once took a buss and it ran over a biker in a motorcicle.
