This is an old post, but is new to Lemmy. I got lucky with some roadside scrap wood, and this was the result! The full-res album is on imgur with build info. I made this about a year ago, and it’s holding up great! Did routing to clear out the bowl, then hand-cut the joinery (mortise and through-tenon) for the stand.
The full build album is on Imgur (with notes and a lot more pictures).
Looks beautiful. How are you liking the Sundara?
I’m really liking them! They’re super clear and really comfortable for me. The build quality is just… OK, but they’re fun to listen to. They’re my second set of open circumaural headphones. My first was the HD599, and I’ve also got Portapros–not circumaural, but “open” (kinda). I didn’t enjoy the HD599 (I think their sound just wasn’t to my taste, and I found them uncomfortable), but fortunately my wife kept those. I pretty much always prefer to listen on the Sundaras, except when it’s not convenient to do so (moving around). I use a Qudelix 5k to drive them and to have the option of Bluetooth (phone) or USB (PC).
I enjoy the HD599 comfort probably more than any other headphone I’ve tried but I can agree that the sound is disappointing. Just bland imo
Yeah, I’m not sure what it was. I even tried EQ; I just couldn’t get into them for some weird reason. For comfort, I think it hit a weird spot on my temple (or jaw; I can’t remember) that was specific to the shape of them. Really bizarre/frustrating. They’re very well designed otherwise, and lightweight. I think the build quality is better than the Sundaras (despite the HD599 being plastic).

God I wish Hifiman had better build quality. It’s the only thing stopping me from buying some of their more expensive headphones.
Yeah, it’s a little goofy having a $300+ metal pair of headphones that I baby because I’m worried they’ll spontaneously disintegrate.
For what it’s worth, I’ve had no issues so far, but they’re rickety and the adjustment slider is really "grind"ey. I hang them by the metal to avoid stretching the strap (you can see in the picture). They’re still really comfortable, and the earpads are holding up well for now. Fingers crossed…
