    So one in three persons (not counting the mule) inside an ancient Roman bakery are making out at any one time is what I am taking away from this.

      A reasonable conclusion that I completely endorse

      (slightly more serious note - Roman businesses were generally done in the same building, but not the same rooms, as apartment complexes - and if a couple of people wanted a quiet nook to neck in away from the prying eyes of family, the apartment hallway was probably a pretty good corner, so this has some basis in reality!)

    As counterintuitive as it might seem to modern eyes, working in the mills and bakeries was actually used as a punishment for disobedient slaves. Pre-modern bakery and mill work is incredibly arduous, miserably hot, and prone to quite lethal accidents - usually fire-related.
