Statec tells us that the population of Luxembourg in 1839 (on the eve of the first migration wave) was a little over 175,000, while later research estimates that around 70,000 left the Grand Duchy for the States between then and the year 1900. The massive population loss must have left Luxembourg feeling a little empty.
