Why do so many of us feel disconnected from each other and ourselves? Perhaps it has to do with our relationship with the food that we consume?

This is a stretch and feels very heavy handed on the part of whoever wrote this book. Would make me concerned with their other interpretations of Taoism. I’m all for having a healthy relationship with food but trying to say it’s a reason why people are more disconnected just feels like a false correlation and something a new age western hippy would say, not someone who has a deep reverence and understanding of Taoism.
Or just have enough compassion for other sentient beings to avoid eating them in the first place
Agreed.
